Eisenhower Rally Ticket
Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890 in Denison, Texas, and raised in Kansas. He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1915. During World War II, he was a five-star General in the U.S. Army, and served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe. He oversaw Operation Torch, which involved the invasion of North Africa, and then later the D-Day invasion of France.
After the war, Eisenhower served as Army Chief of Staff, and in 1951-1952 he served as the first Supreme Commander of NATO.
Extremely popular due to his successes from the war, Ike was encouraged to run for President, and entered the 1952 presidential race as a Republican. He won both his initial presidential election, as well as his second-term election in landslides.
As President, some of his more notable accomplishments included:
After his terms of President, Eisenhower retired to his home in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. During the winter months, he and his wife Mamie, would often stay at a second home they maintained in Palm Desert, California.
Due to a weakening heart, Eisenhower’s last year of life was spent at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC. Eisenhower died peacefully on March 28, 1969 as a result of congestive heart failure.
