Cal Ripken, Jr.
Calvin Edwin "Cal" Ripken, Jr. (born August 24, 1960), nicknamed "The Iron Man", is a former Major League baseball shortstop and third baseman who played 21 seasons for the Baltimore Orioles (1981–2001). He is considered one of the best shortstops and third basemen in baseball history.
During his career, Ripken compiled 3,184 hits, 431 home runs, and 1,695 runs batted in, as well as being awarded two Gold Glove Awards for his defense play. He was selected 19 times to the All-Star team, and was twice designated as the American League’s Most Valuable Player. Ripken is best known for his record for consecutive games played, having played in 2,632 consecutive games. In his final season in 2001, Ripken was named not only the All-Star Game’s Most Valuable Player, but was also honored with the Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award. In 2007, in his first year of eligibility, he was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Ripken has been active in charity work throughout his career, and after retirement, continued working through Ripken Baseball, Inc. to grow the love of baseball from a grassroots level. Since his retirement, he has purchased three minor league baseball teams. He is still considered an ambassador of the game.
