Bre Pettis Autographed Photograph
Bre Pettis was born in Ithaca, New York, but as a teen moved to Seattle, Washington, where he graduated from Bellevue High School. He then attended Evergreen State College, where he pursued coursework in psychology, mythology, and performing arts.
After completing college, he worked a few odd jobs in the film industry, including as a camera assistant for a feature film in Prague in the Czech Republic, and as an assistant at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop in London.
He decided he wanted to go back to college, and attended Pacific Oaks College in order to obtain a teaching certificate. He then worked for Seattle Public Schools as a language arts teach from 1999 through 2006.
In 2009, Bre Pettis, along with Adam Mayer, and Zach “Hoeken” Smith, formed Makerbot in Brooklyn, New York. The company they founded was a pioneer in the 3D printing industry, in that they wanted to take 3D printing technology, which from a cost standpoint had only been viable for large industrial customers, and make it available to the average consumer by offering a desktop 3D printer. Initially the printers were sold as Do-It-Yourself kits, but later as complete units. Bre Pettis was also a co-founder of Thingiverse, a web based platform for people to post their 3D designs for others to print using 3D printers. Markerbot was acquired in 2013 by Stratasys. After leaving the company in 2014, Bre Pettis started up Bre & Co, which designs and manufactures watches, pens, pocket knives, ceramics and jewelry. In 2017, he bought electronics milling machine maker Other Machine.
